Slack + MemorySync

Index messages and thread replies from the Slack channels you approve, so decisions made in chat stay searchable.

Overview

MemorySync's native Slack provider reads only the channels a workspace administrator explicitly approves. It backfills channel history, expands threads, resolves author names, and keeps up with new messages through the Slack Events API. Message edits and deletions in Slack propagate to MemorySync, and revoking a channel stops ingestion immediately.

Setup status and requirements

Supported version
Repository implementation reviewed 2026-08-05
Last setup review

Permissions
A Slack OAuth app installed to the workspace with the channels:read, channels:history, users:read, and users:read.email bot scopes, plus groups:read and groups:history for private channels. MemorySync must be a member of each approved channel; private channels require a human to invite it.
Limits
Public channel memories are readable across the organization. Private channel memories are readable only by the channel’s current Slack members, resolved at query time, and require those members to be linked to MemorySync accounts; private channels are disabled unless the deployment enables them. Direct messages and group direct messages are not supported, because reading another person’s direct messages requires per-user authorization rather than a workspace bot token. Channels shared with an external organization are blocked unless the deployment enables them. File text extraction covers common document and text formats up to a configured size limit; other attachments are recorded as metadata. Initial backfill is bounded by a configurable history window (90 days by default), and Slack free-plan workspaces hide older history. Message edits and deletions are detected through the Events API rather than polling.
